Hi Hashnote 😀

My name is Jasmin, aka Jas. I was a Technical Marketing Engineer (TME) and later became a Senior Product Manager at HPE through opportunities provided, but by night, I’m learning about cybersecurity and data science (AI, ML). I joined Hashnote to document my learning journey 🥳. Also, I’m Latina and will be posting some articles in Spanish.

A Bit About My Tech Journey:

I have a BS in Exercise Science (Clinical Concentration) with a minor in Information Technology Systems. Over the years, I’ve worked in e-commerce, the nonprofit sector, health, and business.

I was accepted to chiropractic school but decided not to go due to financial constraints in 2019. I wanted to become a chiropractor to study the fundamentals and design a chiropractor application. Later, I applied for and was approved for a master’s degree in Information Technology, but I turned it down, even with a scholarship, due to the pandemic in 2020.

Later on, someone told me about Techqueria, a nonprofit for Latinx in tech, which I joined in 2020. I posted there for advice as I was exploring different industries within tech.

Eventually, I self-taught myself to code, starting with freeCodeCamp to solve a problem I witnessed in the community, which was to make an asset map listing nonprofits that didn’t have an online presence.

In 2020, I discovered Leon Noel’s free online bootcamp through someone mentioning it in Techqueria, called 100 Devs, and I started coding after work. Later, I joined Resilient Coders as an opportunity arose in 2021. Resilient Coders is a bootcamp for minorities in tech, also led by Leon Noel. Shout-out to Leon for believing in me!

I experienced COVID-19 during my bootcamp experience, but I’m grateful to have survived it. I worked part-time while attending bootcamp and stayed resilient. I did get a job offer during my bootcamp, but due to personal issues, I had to reject it as during this time, I found out my dad had a possible cancer diagnosis. Thankfully, we later got the good news that he didn’t! 😊

Two months later, I received three job offers the week before my birthday and accepted a role as a Technical Marketing Engineer (TME) at HPE. For a year, I worked on ransomware solutions. Eventually, I became a Senior Product Manager for Software Tools, a role I held for two years until I was impacted by massive layoffs this past August.

Currently, I’m studying cybersecurity and data science (AI, ML), with a particular interest in DevSecOps. I’m open to exploring other roles as well. Even though I was laid off, I’m pushing through the job market and staying determined! My goal is to retire my parents as soon as possible.

Please, if you are a beginner in tech, don’t doubt yourself or think you don’t belong because you do! And remember, rejection is redirection 😀💕
